Removal of Queensland Community Ambulance Cover Levy

On 14 June 2011, Premier Anna Bligh announced the removal of the Community Ambulance Cover (CAC) levy for Queensland electricity customers from 1 July 2011.

What does this mean?

The removal of the CAC levy means that Queenslanders will no longer be required to pay the CAC levy amount of $112.98 per year in order to receive ambulance cover.

From 1 July 2011, Queenslanders will receive ambulance services throughout Australia, free of charge.  The Queensland Government will cover the cost of ambulance services from 1 July 2011.

Who will this impact?

The removal of the CAC levy will affect all Queensland electricity customers, including both residential and business customers.  Neither category of customer will be required to pay the CAC levy from 1 July 2011.

When will the change take effect?

From 1 July 2011, Queensland customers will not be charged the CAC levy on their electricity bill.  Queensland customers' first electricity account after 30 June 2011 should only include a charge for the CAC levy for the number of days up to and including 30 June 2011.

If I already owe the CAC levy for a period prior to 1 July 2011, will I still have to pay?

Yes.  The removal of the CAC levy does not remove any existing liability to pay the levy.  If you owe the CAC levy for any period prior to 1 July 2011, Origin Energy is still required to recover it from you on behalf of the Office of State Revenue.
